Arsenal to reward Jack Wilshere with contract extension
Arsenal are ready to reward England International Jack Wilshere for a positive showing at this summer’s European Championship with a contract extension.

Jack Wilshere has two years remaining on his existing deal and remains of interest to Manchester City but, even in spite of his injury record since 2011, Arsenal still want him to stay at the club in the long-term.

The midfielder has started only one league match all season – against Aston Villa on the final day of the season – but, as a product of the club’s academy, is one of the players most closely identified with by fans.

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger also remains confident that Wilshere can fulfil a potential that first caught the attention of Pep Guardiola – City’s incoming manager – in the 2010-11 season when he was named the PFA young player of the year.

With doubt hanging over the futures of both Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arsenal want to keep a group of players who have been developed at the club, both to meet Premier League ‘home-grown’ quotas but also maintain at least a small British core.

Wilshere has played in only 66 Premier League games during these past five seasons but, should he prove his fitness with England during Euro 2016, is likely to be offered an extension on his current £90,000-a-week deal.
