Luis Suarez breaks Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's record

Uruguay International Luis Suarez has broken Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo ’s stranglehold on La Liga’s top goalscorer award after six seasons of dominance. 

Luiz Suarez had a four-goal lead on Ronaldo going into the final round of fixtures, and netted a hat-trick to extend his advantage and fire him to 40 La Liga goals. 

Suarez becomes the first player outside the dominant pair to win the award since compatriot Diego Forlán for Atletico Madrid at the end of the last decade. 

Suarez’s incredible final tally of 40 had him clear of Ronaldo (35) in second place, but also meant that only the Portuguese and Messi have ever scored more goals in a single La Liga season. 

The former Liverpool man also tops the league in assists and - in all competitions in 2015/16 - has been involved in 81 goals (59 goals, 22 assists).
