Arsenal's defensive injury crisis deepens

Arsenal's defensive injury crisis deepened when defender Gabriel was stretchered off with a serious-looking leg injury in the closing moments of the 3-2 friendly win over Manchester City. 

Gabriel needed oxygen as he was carried off the pitch after he went down trying to win the ball in injury time. 

This leaves the Gunners facing a defensive crisis on the eve of the new Premier League season, with Per Mertesacker sidelined with a long-term injury, while Laurent Koscielny has not featured during the pre-season following his extended break after Euro 2016. 

Arsenal face Liverpool next weekend, with just Calum Chambers and new signing Rob Holding as their only fit senior centre-backs. 

Gabriel's injury marred what was otherwise an encouraging end to Arsenal's pre-season campaign, as goals from Theo Walcott, Alex Iwobi and Chuba Akpom came either side of strikes from Sergio Aguero and Kelechi Iheanacho. 

The Gunners host Liverpool on Sunday afternoon to start their Premier League campaign.
