Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas has questioned why Arsene Wenger did not choose to bolster his Arsenal squad with proven experienced talent in previous seasons.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Southampton at The Emirates, Wenger declared that he feels he now has a team of “men” for the first time in many years.

Wenger moved to bring in a number of new signings during the summer transfer window, including late additions Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi.

The Frenchman has found himself under increasing pressure at The Emirates following his failure to win a trophy last season.

Indeed, the Gunners have not lifted the Premier League trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 season.

And former midfielder Jenas has questioned Wenger’s moves in the transfer market if he himself knew that his squad was lacking experience.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Jenas said:
“Arsene Wenger has said that he now has a team of men, not potential.

“But what stands out from that is that if he knew he didn’t have enough experience in the side why didn’t he sort that out five years ago?

“Yes they have more maturity now. Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott have grown into men who should be winning things.”
