In 20 years as Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has experienced exhilarating highs and despairing lows aplenty, but the Frenchman is certain he can pinpoint a nadir.
It came against the Gunners’ old foes Manchester United – it may not be the match that would immediately spring to mind when thinking about Wenger’s most painful encounters with the Red Devils.
While he has been on the wrong end of an 8-2, 6-1 and 4-0 at Old Trafford down the years, the Frenchman has revealed last season’s 3-2 defeat was perhaps the darkest period of his career.
The reasoning behind it is both simple but wholly understandable, as it was that defeat that ended Arsenal’s hopes of beating Leicester City to the Premier League title.
“One of the worst moments was last year when we lost at Manchester United. It was the moment where you felt the championship is lost,” Wenger told Thierry Henry during a Sky Sports interview.“It was a game we couldn’t afford to lose and not to turn up on the day, you wonder ‘what did I do wrong there? What didn’t work?’ It was a game we were expected to win, absolutely.“We had to win it but I felt, more than losing the game, we were just not at the races on the day.”
