Former Tottenham coach Harry Redknapp believes that Arsenal or Chelsea should make a move to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United next summer if the striker is still struggling for playing time at Old Trafford.
Rooney has found his first team opportunities somewhat limited under new manager Jose Mourinho this season as the Portuguese coach tinkers with his best formation at United.
The 30-year-old has been limited to five starts in United’s seven Premier League games and has only been used as a substitute in his last three appearances for the Red Devils.
It remains to be seen whether Rooney will break back into the United starting line-up this season or if he will be forced to settle for a role from the substitutes’ bench under Mourinho.
However,Harry Redknapp feels that Rooney would be wise to look at other potential Premier League suitors next summer if he is not happy about his situation at Old Trafford.
Writing in his column for The London Evening Standard, Redknapp said:
“He [Rooney] would be a great signing for a couple of seasons and could have a major impact on a Premier League club.“He could tip the balance for a top-four team if United were to let him go.“I’d take Wayne at Arsenal or Chelsea and he has to play as a No9 — midfield isn’t for him yet.”
