Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney lifted the FA Cup for the first time in his career - but admitted it have been a below par season for the Red devils.

The FA Cup is a mere consolation for a club like United and a player like Rooney whose ambitions are winning titles, European glory and, at the very least, finishing in the top four.

The 30-year-old was honest in his assessment as he admitted they fell below United’s own high standards and said the season ended in “disappointment.”

Rooney said:
“You have to set yourself standards and we fell below them this season. You have to make sure as players we get back to those standards and we start challenging for the main trophies. It is a massive club.

“I think we wanted to finish at least in the Champions League places and we haven’t. We were disappointed with where we finished.

“Certainly in the Premier League it wasn’t good enough, we dropped too many points. We finished where we deserved to finish so we have to improve on that, we know that. Hopefully we will.

“Since Sir Alex hasn’t been here we haven’t won a trophy and we have a fairly new squad who haven’t won much together.

“You want both ideally, to finish in the top four and to win a trophy. But we didn’t finish fourth. We have said that’s not good enough for us.

“We have won the FA Cup and I don’t think you can compare the two - finishing fourth and winning a trophy - because you want to do both.”
