Football history was made on Wednesday when a penalty was awarded with the help of video replays for the first time.

FIFA's Club World Cup was the stage for the ground-breaking moment, as referee Viktor Kassai consulted a TV monitor pitchside to make his decision during the clash between Kashima Antlers and Atletico Nacional.

Kashima defender Daigo Nishi was fouled inside the box by Atletico forward Orlando Berrio in the 31st minute of the encounter, an incident initially missed by the officials.

However, Kassai was alerted to the possibility of a penalty through the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, which is being fully implemented for the first time at the Club World Cup.

After spending 10 seconds reviewing the replays, Kassai pointed to the penalty spot from his touchline position on the halfway line.
